A boat made from waste from the air-conditioning industry, woven together by hand and resting on discarded plastic bottles.

Barco Branco refers to the fragile boats used by refugees crossing seas in search of a safer life. Europe, for many, is imagined as a place where that life might be possible. The material itself carries a contradiction: industrial waste becomes a vessel for people who have been forced to leave everything behind.

Alongside the boat is a list of common refugee names from around the world. Visitors are invited to choose a name and write it onto the boat with a felt pen.

The gesture is small, but personal. A statistic becomes a person. A refugee becomes a name.

The work is therefore not only about migration. It is about the human beings hidden behind the numbers, headlines and political arguments.

The boat cannot actually carry anyone anywhere. It remains suspended on a sea of discarded plastic — a fragile vessel built from the waste of the society it is trying to reach.

The audience completes the work by adding a name.
